Apple Hill, Placerville

I remember going to Apple Hill as a kid and eating corn dogs, apple pie, and caramel apples (maybe not all at the same time).  I also liked to pick out our pumpkin for Halloween.  If you want to beat the crowds, go on a day like today, but it wasn’t quite as exciting as I remembered.  Maybe it’s because I’m not 10 anymore, but it was a bit of a ghost town and there were no pumpkins yet.  If you go, try a Mutsu apple and eat an apple turnover at Boa Vista Orchards.  Both were so good, we got a bunch to take home!

Boa Vista Orchards, 2952 Carson Road, Placerville, California, 95667.

Although much of the experience of going to Apple Hill is about eating, you can also go wine tasting, pick apples, fish, and shop for crafts.

My Mom’s Backyard, Sacramento

Today, I helped my mom harvest some plumbs from her backyard with a fruit picker basket.  Only one plumb landed on my head and about 5 hit the ground–perhaps my future does not lie in being a farmer.  We weighed the loot and collected 5.2 pounds.  The tree is still stocked, and she has already picked over 50 pounds.  I think they are the best plumbs on the planet.  (So are her tomatoes.)
